With its member states winning a total of 87 gold medals in the Beijing Olympic Games, which have just ended, France’s secretary of state for European Affairs Jean-Pierre Jouyet said that the EU is «the first international Olympic power”, ahead of China (51 gold medals) and the USA (36). Jouyet also wants the International Olympic Committee to keep a tally of the medals won by the European Union.
