New EU sports platform
Tuesday 19 May 2009
A new independent ‘EU sports platform, created on 18 May, aims to “improve the sports movement’s understanding of EU law”. The platform, which will have its first official event in the European Parliament, on 8 July, wants to “provide a service aimed at both large and small sporting organisations – including those not currently represented in Brussels, which may not realise the impact of EU law on their operations”. Outgoing MEP Chris Heaton-Harris (EPP-ED, UK), the chair of the EP’s Sports Intergroup between 2001 and 2009 and a ‘keen’ amateur football referee, will serve as chairman of the new platform.
