Minimum labour standards in fisheries sector
Monday 21 May 2012
Fishermen operating in European waters will be assured of having better working conditions under an agreement, signed on 21 May, on the occasion of European Maritime Day. The employers’ associations Europêche and Cogeca signed with the European Transport Workers’ Federation an agreement establishing minimum requirements for working conditions, accommodation and food, occupational safety and health protection, medical care and social security. It will apply to all fishing vessels and all fishermen, including multinational crews. The agreement, which results from negotiations launched in 2010 by the European social partners, implements at EU level the International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention on work in the fisheries sector. It paves the way to full ratification of the convention by member states by the end of 2012 and its global entry into force in 2013.
