MEPs debate transgender rights

Wednesday 01 September 2010

Participants in the conference on transgender equality, sponsored by the Greens-EFA group on 1 September, called for this issue to be included in EU legislation more rapidly. MEPs Marije Cornelissen (Greens-EFA, Netherlands), Antonyia Parvanova (ALDE, Bulgaria), Britta Thomsen (S&D, Denmark) and Eva-Britt Svensson (EUL-NGL, Sweden) lent their backing to the appeal. They also called attention to the EP’s adoption, in late June, of a report that calls for more explicit measures to combat discrimination based on gender identity. “We can take action in EP committees, as borne out by the report by Ilda Figueiredo (which calls for the EU authorities to include organisations of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people in future work on gender equality). And we plan to keep going,” commented Svensson, chair of the Women’s Rights Committee.
