French digitisation plan approved

Wednesday 21 March 2012

The European Commission has approved a French scheme to support the digitisation of historic cinematographic works. The programme is meant to make the European film heritage available to the widest possible audience thanks to new technologies. The Commission notes that the plan, which has a budget of €400 million for six years, constitutes an appropriate means of attaining the objective of promoting culture and that the distortion of competition is limited. In addition, the aid is mainly targeted at works whose commercial prospects are very uncertain or very long-term. The aid intensity will be adapted on a case-by-case basis taking into account the money-making potential of the work concerned.
