Football to defuse conflicts
Wednesday 02 June 2010
The NGO Search for Common Ground, with funding from the European Commission and the British and American governments, is promoting, in connection with the Football World Cup, a peacemaking initiative based on football in a TV or radio series. Its programme ‘The Team’, produced in each of the partner countries, deals with a local problem - tribal, ethnic, religious or social – in a work of fiction that portrays the members of a football team who must overcome their differences to win the game together. ‘The Team’ is broadcast on TV in Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya and Morocco and on radio in Ethiopia. It will be broadcast in Palestine during the World Cup and produced over the next three years in around ten other countries (Africa, Indonesia, Nepal and Pakistan). The concept is being studied in Europe (Belgium, France, Kosovo and the UK), where it would be adapted to the national contexts (dialogue between communities or social cohesion, for example).
