European trade union day of action on 29 September
Wednesday 01 September 2010
Around 100,000 workers are expected to demonstrate in the streets of Brussels, on 29 September, in answer to the call by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) to protest against austerity measures being implemented in many European countries. “Employees cannot be the only ones to pay for the irresponsible speculation of certain financial institutions,” states the organisation. Its slogan for the march is ‘No to austerity. Priority for jobs and growth’. “We are particularly alarmed over unemployment and rising inequalities,” declared ETUC General Secretary John Monks. “On 29 September, we will demonstrate to voice our concern over the economic and social context, which will be compounded by austerity measures,” he added. Simultaneously with the demonstration in Brussels, a general strike will be held in Spain and protest movements are planned in Portugal, Italy, Latvia and Poland.
