The ministers at the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council, on 10 May, officially designated Donostia-San Sebastian and Wroclaw as European capitals of culture for 2016. Wroclaw is the capital of Lower Silesia in Poland. Donostia-San Sebastian is the capital of the province of Guipuscoa in Spain. The ‘European capital of culture’ initiative was launched in 1985 to promote the richness and diversity of the European cultural heritage. In July, the European Commission is set to present a proposal for the European capitals of culture for 2020.
