Gas Coordination Group meets
Tuesday 15 December 2009
The Gas Coordination Group (GCG), set up by Directive 2004/67 on the security of gas supply, poured over the outlook for gas supply and the EU’s emergency preparedness. The meeting, in Brussels on 14 December, also heard a presentation from Russia’s Gazprom. The Russian gas giant, also supported by the European gas industry, is eager to convince the Commission that more emphasis must be put on the relative environmental gains from gas in terms of CO
2 emission as opposed to other fossil fuels. The GCG also held an exchange of views with Ukrainian gas company Naftogaz on transit of Russian gas via Ukraine to the EU as well as the outlook for the winter of 2009-2010 in Ukraine. The next meeting of the group is scheduled for 12 January 2010.
