Forest fires: Greece seeks assistance
Monday 18 June 2012
On the evening of 16 June, Greece activated the European civil protection mechanism to obtain assistance fighting forest fires raging close to Keratea in South Attica. The Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) immediately forwarded the Greek call for assistance to all the mechanism’s member states. Within 40 minutes, it was able to make a first offer of aid to Greece from Italy. Greece is particularly in need of Canadair CL415 fire bombers to support its forces engaged in the campaign. Italy immediately offered to send two Canadairs with ten crew members, which left Ciampino airbase in Rome, on 17 June. Bulgaria also offered a fire-fighting helicopter and Croatia, in its first gesture of solidarity through the EU civil protection mechanism, offered a fire-fighting jet.
