Forest fires: EU aid to Montenegro
Monday 16 July 2012
Following the call for assistance made on 14 July by the Montenegrin authorities, the European Civil Protection Mechanism is coordinating fire-fighting assistance to deal with serious forest fires in the Northern part of the country. The European Commission’s Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) immediately communicated Montenegro’s request for assistance to the 32 European countries collaborating in civil protection, and secured assistance from Croatia. It sent two helicopters with a crew of eight people. The EU Civil Protection Mechanism stated that it remains at the disposal of its participating states to coordinate the provision of assistance if needed. The Commission’s civil protection experts are constantly monitoring the risks of forest fires – which remain high across Southern Europe, due to the continuing heat wave and low precipitation – and are in regular contact with their national counterparts so that a fast and coordinated reaction can be provided in case of new emergencies.
