Pharmaceutical industry spends 40 mn euro on lobbying

A study conducted by Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) and Health Action International Europe (HAI) reveals that the pharmaceuticals lobby spends more than €40 million annually to influence policy making in the EU. Civil society organisations active in the field of medicines spend a combined total of €3.4 million per year. CEO and HAI worked on the basis of entries made by pharmaceutical companies and their representatives in the EU’s lobby transparency register. The two NGOs consider that, given the voluntary nature of the register, many companies choose not to declare the amounts they spend on lobbying. According to the two organisations, actual expenditure on lobbying activities by the industry could be as high as €91 million. The report is available at
