The European Commission and Parliament relaunched, on 6 May, discussions initiated under the previous legislature to set up a joint register and code of conduct for lobbyists based in Brussels. The Commissioner for Interinstitutional Relations, Maros Sefcovic, met British Liberal Diana Wallis, who heads the EP working group, and both assured that the goal is to bring the project to conclusion “as soon as possible”. In June 2008, the Commission set up a voluntary register that currently includes 2,700 listings. The EP has a de facto mandatory register because, to enter the institution’s buildings, lobbyists are required to wear an access badge that is only issued to those listed in the register. The Commission has never said, however, that it would make registration mandatory under a future joint register. Reacting to this meeting, the Society of European Affairs Professionals (SEAP) said the executive should revise its complaint and sanctions procedure.
