Belgium wants good Council-EP ties

Friday 09 July 2010

Belgian Secretary of State for European Affairs Olivier Chastel met with his European counterparts, on 8 July in Brussels, to tackle the priorities of the Presidency, which began on 1 July, and to discuss relations between the Council and the European Parliament. The Belgian Presidency wants to “set a good precedent in interinstitutional relations” and “manage the important legislative work” for this six-month period. The secretaries of state for European affairs of the Spanish-Belgian-Hungarian trio will thus meet the Secretary-General of the European Parliament, Klaus Welle (Germany), on 12 July. The aim is to “informally follow, each month, all of the challenges and difficulties associated with legislative development,” explains Chastel. The President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek (EPP, Poland), will then meet the Belgian prime minister after two and four months of the Presidency.
