Four European ambassadors to combat poverty

Friday 27 August 2010

The 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty has, as of the beginning of August, gained four European ambassadors, in addition to its 130 national ambassadors. They are: former President of Latvia, Vaira Vike-Freiberga; Secretary-General of Caritas Internationalis, Lesley-Anne Knight; Polish choreographer and TV personality, Michal Pirog; and actress and top model, Tasha de Vasconcelos. “I am delighted to see such significant and diverse personalities acting as European year ambassadors”, declared László Andor, European commissioner responsible for social affairs. “Their strong personal commitment and active involvement will help strengthen the message that combating poverty is a shared responsibility, where all public and private actors have a role to play.” In this context, 3,000 children from all over Europe have benefited from the opportunity to spend a few days in Paris, through the holiday scheme organised by the Secours Populaire Français (SPF) for the past thirty years.
