Updated regulation for trade in endangered species
Friday 27 August 2010
The Council of the EU decided on 26 July not to oppose adoption by the Commission of a regulation amending Council regulation 338/97 on the protection of wild fauna and flora. The amendments implement changes to the international trade regime in endangered species agreed at the 15th session of the conference of the parties to the convention on international trade in endangered species of wild fauna and flora, held in Doha, Qatar, in March 2010. In accordance with the regulatory procedure with scrutiny the Council may object to an act which exceeds the implementing powers of the Commission, an act which is not compatible with the purpose or content of the basic instrument or does not follow the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality of the EU. Since the Council has given its agreement, the Commission may adopt the regulation, unless the European Parliament objects.
