MEPs discuss Serbia’s candidacy

Thursday 12 January 2012

Members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) met, on 12 January, to discuss a draft resolution on Serbia’s EU integration. The draft, presented to the committee by Jelko Kacin (ALDE, Slovenia), special rapporteur on Serbia, calls on the Council to grant Belgrade EU candidate status in March. However, it is noted in the resolution that Serbian authorities have yet to meet several conditions, such as reducing corruption and continuing the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue. Serbia is expected to “guarantee complete removal of the remaining barricades, which would allow free access to crossings and the Serbian authorities are also urged to facilitate cooperation between Kosovo Serbs and KFOR and EULEX so they could implement their mandate,” the draft notes.
