EU external trade deficit up

Estimates published by Eurostat, on 16 July , for the eurozone trade balance with the rest of the world, in May 2010, show a €3.4 billion deficit, compared with +€2.2 bn in May 2009 and +€0.3 bn in April 2010. The May 2010 extra-EU27 trade balance was a €15.1 bn deficit, compared with -€7 bn in May 2009 and -€11 bn in April 2010. The EU27 deficit rose for energy (-€91.5 bn in January-April 2010, compared with -€76.1 bn in January-April 2009), while the surplus for manufactured goods increased (+€50.5 bn, compared with +€34.7 bn). The EU27 trade surplus increased with the US, Switzerland and Turkey. The trade deficit increased with Russia.
