European Commission President José Manuel Barroso has “warmly” congratulated Olafur Ragnar Grimsson for his record fifth re-election as president of Iceland, on 30 June, expressing his optimism that a “constructive discussion” on the country’s path towards EU will continue. “As we move forward in the accession negotiations, I am sure that we will continue to have an open and constructive discussion about how to make progress on Iceland’s path of European integration,” Barroso said. “I am confident that under your leadership the close cooperation between the European Union and Iceland will deepen further,” he added. Barroso assured Grimsson of the Commission’s strong commitment to pursue the “privileged relationship” both regions enjoy. After 16 years in power, Grimsson was re-elected for his fifth four-year term with 52.8% of the vote.
