EP wishes to strengthen development education
Thursday 05 July 2012
Members of the European Parliament encourage the strengthening of development education policies at national and European level. Meeting in plenary, on 5 July, they officially adopted a written declaration inviting the European Commission and Council to draw up a long-term and cross-sector European strategy for development education, awareness-raising and active global citizenship. The declaration also calls on member states to develop or strengthen national development education strategies. “The EU is one of the largest fund donors with respect to development education. However, it has never adopted a strategy for development education. […] Similarly, although a number of member states have already adopted a national development education strategy, their content is not always implemented,” commented Catherine Grèze (Greens-EFA, France), co-author of the declaration with Filip Kaczmarek (EPP, Poland), Fiona Hall (ALDE, UK), Maria Badia i Cutchet (S&D, Spain) and Michael Gahler (EPP, Germany).
