EGF funding in Spain

Friday 27 August 2010

The European Commission has accepted Spain’s application for support from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to help workers in the clothing industry. A total of 703 workers in 82 small and medium-sized enterprises have lost their jobs in Galicia (Spain) due to a high number of bankruptcies in the sector. On 23 August, the Commission approved the release of €1,844,700 to help 500 of the least favoured redundant workers back into employment. «During the period between 2007 and 2009, 32,700 jobs were lost in the manufacturing industry,» declared László Andor, the commissioner for employment, social affairs and inclusion. «Redundant workers are finding it hard to reach new opportunities [but] I am confident that the EGF training and support will help cushion the transition to a new job.» The European Parliament and Council still have to approve Spain’s request.
