Greens’ manifesto
A ‘Green New Deal’ for Europe
Thursday 07 May 2009
Securing our energy and environmental future
* The EU should commit to emissions reductions of 40% by 2020 and 80-95% by 2050 based on 1990 levels.
* The EU must set itself the target of creating five million green collar jobs over five years.
* A binding target should be set to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2020.
* A European Renewables Community (ERENE) should be created to support the long-term goal of 100% energy from renewable resources.
* Energy distribution and production should be unbundled.
* Nuclear energy cannot be part of the solution to climate change.
* The future of agriculture lies in organic farming and fair trade. The EU should be a GMO-free zone. The CFP should be reformed to make fishermen responsible for sustainably managing fisheries.
* The EU needs to do more to address threats to public health.
Social justice and globalisation: Fighting for a fairer Europe
* An EU watchdog should be created to scrutinise and regulate financial markets and services.
* A financial transaction levy should be introduced.
* Massive investment is required in education, science and research in green, future-oriented technologies.
* Social and labour rights must be strengthened and workers.
* Equal pay for equal work must also apply to posted, immigrant and temporary workers.
* Efforts to deliver on the Millennium Development Goals need to be speeded up.
* The WTO must transform its free trade agenda to a fair and sustainable one, putting the protection of common goods and poverty reduction first.
Democracy and human rights: A responsible EU that listens and is heard
* The European Parliament should have the right to initiate legislation, the voting age be lowered and European referenda introduced.
* There must be full transparency for all involved in EU decision making processes.
* Rights and freedoms must not be sacrificed in the fight against terrorism.
* Immigration policy should provide a fair chance for people wishing to live in the EU.
