Commission ups its assistance to Sahel children
Wednesday 15 February 2012
The European Commission announced, on 15 February, that it had agreed to a €30 million humanitarian aid deal for children and women in the Sahel region. The new funds will be part of a joint effort with the UN world food programme (WFP) to support feeding programmes for one million children under two years old and half a million pregnant and breast-feeding women. “We are doing everything we can now to reduce the impact of a failed harvest and prevent it from turning into another major food crisis,” said the EU’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Kristalina Georgieva. On 8 February, the Commission announced that it was increasing the funding to fight the Sahel food crisis to €275 million.
