Ceiling collapses at Committee of the Regions

Friday 27 August 2010

During the night of 7 August, part of the false ceiling that insulates Atriums 5 and 6 in the Jacques Delors building, home to the Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions in Brussels, collapsed. The incident did not occur during working hours so only resulted in material damage. The owner and guarantor for the construction was immediately informed since the building is still covered by a ten-year warranty for workmanship. The secretaries-general of the two committees ordered a detailed check of all areas potentially concerned by the accident. The companies in charge of the construction work have accepted their liability for the incident so the check and repairs will not lead to any costs for the EU. As a precaution, the damaged area has been sealed off until further notice.
