Industrial production expands in EU

Confirming signs of recovery, seasonally adjusted industrial production rose by 1.7% in the euro area and by 1.8% in the EU27 in January 2010 compared with December 2009. In December, production had already risen by 0.6% and 0.3% respectively, reported Eurostat on 12 March. In January 2010 compared with January 2009, industrial production expanded by 1.4% in the euro zone and by 1.5% in the EU27.

In January 2010 compared with December 2009, energy production grew by 2.2% in the EU27. Durable consumer goods rose by 1.7%, intermediate goods by 0.3% and capital goods by 0.4%. Non-durable consumer goods rose by 0.5%. Industrial production expanded in 13 member states and fell in six. The biggest increases were registered in Ireland (+15.3%), Bulgaria (+4.9%), Estonia (+4.5%) and Denmark (+3.9%) and the largest declines in Portugal and Finland (both -2.2%), Latvia (-1.6%) and Spain (-1.1%).

In January 2010 compared with January 2009, production of intermediate goods grew by 3.9% in the EU27. Capital goods increased by 1.7% and non-durable consumer goods by 0.2%. Energy production shrank by 2.4%. Durable consumer goods increased by 1.5%. Industrial production rose in 12 member states and declined in seven. The biggest increases were seen in Malta (+14.3%), Poland (+11%), Czech Republic (+8%) and Romania (+6.8%). The biggest decreases were registered in Denmark (-9.8%), Lithuania (-5.5%), Greece (-4.4%) and Spain (-2.5%).
